Large-Scale Multi-Function CNC Machine
Multi-Function Bridge - Version 2
The original version of the machine (MFBPV1) was originally designed by previous graduate and coop students to work with the Wood Framing Machine to improve the production of residential wall panels. Though the previous version was never brought to the prototyping phase, after extensive review of the project it was decided by the team that due to the number of issues with the machine it would be best to start a new design.
Leading the team of mechanical co-op students, we were able to address the issues of the original version of the machine as well on improve the design by reducing the complexity and weight of the machine. In doing so, we have created the second version that also allows the use of multiple different sets of tools and allows for the processing of wall and floor panels. Further, the Transfer System used to secure the frame and transport the frame between stations was redesigned for better performance.
Version 1 to Version 2
Tool Modules
Nailing Module
The Nailing Module is one of the configurations of the Tool Module. Its primary purpose is to perform the nailing operations on the wooden panel. There is the option to use an industrial nailer or a hand-held nailer off the shelf.
Spindle Module
The Spindle (Router) Module is one of the configurations of the Tool Module. Its primary purpose is to provide a rotating axis on the machine. There are multiple use cases for the spindle, such as routing or drilling. There is the option to use an industrial spindle or a hand-held router off the shelf.
Cutting Module
The Cutting Module is one of the configurations of the Tool Module. Its primary purpose is to perform the cutting operations on the wooden panel. There is currently only one option for the cutting module, which uses an off the shelf hand saw.
